New 2009 Challenge.

Raise Money for the Cancer Council.

Andrew Hogben is putting out the call for cyclists to join him to cycle from Melbourne to Ayers rock in order to raise money for cancer.

In January 2008, as a lone cyclist, I rode from Melbourne to Sydney over a 5 day period to raise money for the cancer council. The end result was $10,500 raised which was allocated to cancer research.

Whilst this was a challenging and rewarding life achievement, I would like to put out an invitation to the cycling community for anyone to join me to go one better; ride from Melbourne to Ayers rock in 2009.

Melbourne to Ayers rock is approximately 2,300km and would be an average of 177km per day over 13 days. Depending on terrain, accommodation locations and needs for rest, the distance on each day will vary.

Why a team of cyclists: (Team =anywhere between 2-12 cyclists)

Riding with a group of cyclists will make the trip more enjoyable, and more importantly each ride can contribute to raising money by promoting the ride within their own networks.

Why in 2009:

Giving 12 months to prepare is important. This allows time to organise maximum sponsorship, physical preparation and extras like support team volunteers and accommodation donations.

What is needed:

The idea is to get sponsorship for as many of the costs as possible. You will need to supply your own bike / supplies. I will be searching for a sponsor, and the more cyclists, the better chance of securing a cycling sponsor. You will need to supply your own food and drink as well. The only other costs are Petrol for the support car and accommodation (note: the majority of accommodation will be either donated or heavily discounted).
